th (64)The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Genesis 1:2

I was born again in the early 70’s. Historians call this time period of Christian activity, the Jesus Movement. It was common for young people who wanted to become so much like Jesus to be called a Jesus Freak. As with all movements of change in culture, there were excesses and misunderstandings. There is no doubt that many were saved and healed during this time period.

The core beliefs included a restoration to life as closely related to the events in the book of Acts including, signs and wonders and all the gifts of the Spirit. Modern day contemporary music can thank the “Jesus Music” songwriters and singers who brought their instruments and styles into the church which was formerly dominated by piano and organs. There was a strong view of evangelism and the return of Christ. The Spirit was hovering over the chaos of the times bringing  life and light.

I believe that God is once again stirring the waters and the Holy Spirit is moving. I know that God has always been at work and people have been getting saved before and after the Jesus Movement. But there was a thirst and hunger for God’s help that was prevalent across different ages, denominations and cultures. No boundaries could be made that the Spirit could not reach into, to radically transform lives for salvation. The Spirit of God was moving.

The word “hovering” Hebrew root word is “rachaph”. It has the imagery of “gently moving over something in a relaxing pattern”. Another idea for the word would be the “brooding of a bird over her young or gently fluttering”. The implication was that the Spirit was moving over the chaos of the darkness and formless earth to prepare it for what was about to happen. The next verse gives God’s response to the “moving or hoovering” of the Spirit – Then God said, “Let there be light!”

There is only one Holy Spirit and His voice is consistent when He speaks. Repeatedly, I am hearing a growing desire for evangelism to bring forth new life. Different people form all over the world are engaged in salvation, discipleship and church planting. The waters are stirring all over the world and people are becoming saved. The chaos and emptiness of humanism, capitalism, socialism, and relativism have left hungry souls of people asking if there is a reality for more life…Jesus is life everlasting.

What must we do when the Spirit begins to move in a fresh new way? Jesus first words of preaching are still appropriate. “Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand.” Ask God for forgiveness for chasing after food and drink that do not satisfy, for spending time and money on things that are not eternal and for not pursuing a Mary’s heart in a Martha’s world. Daily position your heart and mind with this prayer before the Lord, “Here am I, send Me!”

The Holy Spirit is moving throughout the whole earth looking for those hearts that are committed and longing for God. Let Him breathe new life over you daily. Prepare and the flow with the Spirit.
