Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 1 Corinthians 6:19 NIV
When God created these earthen vessels in which we live, He was a master craftsman. We are fearfully and wonderfully made. It is even more interesting to know that our born again spirit has the capacity to cohabit with God’s Spirit. God lives inside us and our bodies can carry (house) this treasure!
He is more than a whisper giving directions like a SIRI telling you to turn left or right. Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as our Helper who will be with us forever. Before becoming a follower of Jesus, the Spirit is not presently abiding with us. After salvation, the Spirit comes and remains giving us power to live holy and fulfill the commands of Christ to love the world.
When Paul said “you are not your own”, he could have also said “you are never alone”. The Spirit abides always. Even when you are too busy to acknowledge His abiding presence, He is with you.
The weight of Paul’s statement also includes a lack of freedom to do what ever you want whenever you want. Our actions and decisions are made with God and to honor God. A temple is a place of worship and reverence. We say no to sin and yes to the joy of loving and serving others.
We think of a temple like a church or a sanctuary situated on a corner lot or on a country plot of land with a cemetery beside it. I think Paul had in mind the original tabernacle in the desert. It remained in the center of all activity, housed the presence and glory of God, and moved with them wherever they went.
Am i, I am a temple of the Holy Spirit. That is a bold statement. That is a clarifying statement. That is an overwhelming concept. That is a convicting statement. That is a beautiful reality for me to experience daily.
May you be encouraged by the presence, leading and guiding of your comforter, the Holy Spirit of God. He is more than amazing.
Blessings, Love y’all
