Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. 1 Peter 3:9

I was listening to the news the other day and commented, “it is refreshing that the media is being positive with the new president.” The last four years has been a verbal mudslinging of insults in which everyone gets splattered including those who were listening.

It is so very easy to get caught up in eye for eye, tooth for tooth, insult for insult, judgment for judgment, my way is right for my way is right, name calling for name calling, fault finding for fault finding, belittling for belittling, anger for anger, and retaliation for being offended.

The American constitution gives its citizens the right to “freedom of speech”, but that doesn’t mean that all speaking is right for a Christian. We are different. We have been rescued out of the kingdom of darkness of eye for eye into the kingdom of light of repaying evil with a blessing.

The word blessing in our verse today is from the root greek word eulogeo which is a compound of eu (good) and logos (word). We would use the phrase “to speak well of another” or to gain the “word of praise when someone is speaking highly of us”.

You May Be Thinking…

  • “It’s NOT fair”
  • “That person does not deserve to be treated this way. “
  • “After what they just said, someone needs to set the straight.”;
  • “I can’t just let them say that and get away with it.”
  • “They are just plain out wrong and lying, at least I am justified in saying what I am saying.”
  • “Because they hurt me with words, I have the right to hurt them back”

They only way off of the merry-go-round of insults and evil is repaying it with blessing. Listen, listen Jesus did not treat us in the way that our sins deserved. He forgave our brutish, stubborn, offensive lifestyle. We deserved death and He gave us life. We deserved judgment and He gave us His kindness. We deserved condemnation and He responded with pure love.

Some may say, but I am not Jesus. True. But as a child of God, the holiness DNA is now flowing through your life. When you take a moment to talk with the Holy Spirit you will see that He always leads to speaking life and blessing. You don’t have to remain quiet when insults and evil are being hurled, just don’t fall into the temptation to act the same way. Ask God to help you see the other person as He sees them and say about the other person as He speaks about them.

You bless and inherit a blessing. Try it, I think you will like the peace that it brings.

Blessings Love y’all
