So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring  and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” Genesis 3:14-15 NIV

Advent Chronicles is a first person narrative of those who share in the story of the hope of the coming Messiah. Today we let Eve share her ultimate hope.

If looks could kill, I would have hurt Adam badly. We both ate the forbidden fruit. We were both ashamed of our nakedness. If it wasn’t for me, he would not have even been able to cover himself up. At least we thought we were doing right by hiding.

When Yahweh asked, “Adam, where are you?”, I thought we could stay hidden a little longer. Adam stepped forward and began conversing with God about our problem. Then I felt betrayal. Adam pointed his finger and exposed me as the culprit….oooh, I was so mad. He was my covering. He could have taken the blame. I definitely gave him a squinted eye look which shouted, “how dare you leave me alone to explain what happened.” Embarrassed, I also shifted the blame to the serpent who had deceived me.

In the middle of our reprimand, more like a judgment, Yahweh gave hope to me amidst the consequences. He wasn’t even talking to me, but to the serpent, when He said, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

Honestly, I didn’t see any reason to wait. Why didn’t Adam go ahead and crush his head right now. He hurt us both. Don’t get me wrong, I am for life and I really don’t want anything to die. We were the first watch the life be taken from an animal, The image of the first death will never leave me.

Yahweh had told us that we would die when WE ate from the tree, but we didn’t die immediately. I thought we had escaped death, until He showed us how the lamb was to be sacrificed on our behalf. Yahweh showed us how to drain the blood – the life in his body. He showed us which parts were for food and how to make clothing from the skin. The lamb died that day instead of us.

We had to leave the garden provided for us. My time alone with Adam shifted as we had to spend more time planting, harvesting and preparing our food. With the birth of our first son, Cain,  I had hope again, “With the help of the Lord, I have brought forth a baby boy, a man.” Maybe he will be the one to crush the serpent’s head?

Many years have passed since my heart was crushed when Cain killed his brother Abel. God drove him further away and we no longer see him, though we heard Yahweh still watches over him. Who could have imagined the pain of the consequences of our initial disobedience?

Now I have given birth again to another son, Seth. Yahweh has shown me underserved mercy. I am truly sorry for my sinful actions. Yahweh is committed to us with steadfast love. I no longer expect Adam nor Seth to avenge our wrong. BUT a champion will come. As grace has fallen upon us one more time, Yahweh will keep His promise.

The story is still unfolding. May you watch for His coming. He will settle the account and make all things new. As I hold Seth and look at Adam, my heart is filled with a steadfast hope for a redeemer to come forth. He will be worth all of the waiting. He will crush that serpent’s head. Yahweh has spoken.

Over the centuries, Eve has taken the blame for being the first to be deceived. When Jesus was resurrected, He first appeared to a woman. Death and Satan received the crushing blow and lost their ultimate power. May you, like Eve, receive the grace of forgiveness which is offered by the Son of Man, Jesus our Savior. With God there is hope after our most embarrassing stupid nd sinful indulgences. Eve invites you to experience hope this Advent. You can read the rest of Eve’s story in Genesis 3.

Blessings Love y’all
