2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness.Genesis 1:2-4 NLT
This is probably one of my favorite passages in the Bible. It expresses the heart of God toward His creation and mankind. He brings order and light out of chaos and darkness by speaking His heart – life and light.
Verse 3 is the hinge for God’s involvement. In verse 2 the conditions are stated of creation before God gets involved – darkness, formless, empty or void. That describes well the condition of mankind, before the redemption of God in our lives. We walk about in darkness, purposeless, and empty.
THEN said, God. This is the word order in Hebrew – conjunction, verb, verb subject. Some of the translations use the conjunction AND showing the continuity of the preceding thought. I think the THEN is a better choice as it reflects movement from what was to what will be. Secondly the verb, to speak, amer, drives the sentence. In Hebrew thought, the spoken word has authority and power.
Then speaks God. It’s like the spotlight turns on the dark stage where movement has been occurring in the shadows, but lacks the order and meaning of what is about to happen. From above the spotlight cues up center stage on the conductor. His voice calls forth the first notes of life to begin playing. With each word creation’s form and sound light up on the stage.
THEN said God – is a pattern for how God works in our lives. His Spirit is always hovering over our chaos to bring order and life. THEN God speaks.
Today some of you are waiting to hear His words of life and light. You have been going through some really difficult and dark times. Death of loved ones, financial struggles, job frustrations, and broken down relationships. Please KNOW that the Spirit has already been hovering over your chaos. In the stillness, listen, THEN said God.
Notice it is past tense. God’s word has already been spoken over your life. His plans for good, hope and a future are already purposed for you. Jesus died for your sins and said It is finished. His promises are yes and amen and now fully available.
But some still need to hear His words fresh and anew. I pray that right now you will hear His words of love and care over you. I pray that you receive a fresh wind of His Spirit moving on your life. I pray that you will be encouraged by Hearing his voice of hope over your circumstance.
THEN said God – to you, over you, for you, and about you. Receive by faith and experience that His speaking begins the creative work of movement toward good, life and light for you, this day.
Blessings Love y’all
