And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. Psalm 1:3

The Tree Song Devo

I’ve mentioned about listening to a singer named Ken Medema who I’ve caught up on some of his albums from the 2000’s. He has written some songs for kids which I have thoroughly enjoyed as it touches the creative side of me. One song is called The Tree Song. He asks trees from different places (by a river, on a winter mountain, in the middle of the city) how they grow to be strong and do what they do. This is their reply.

Chorus
This is the song my tree friend sang to me.
I have roots growing down to the water.
I have leaves reaching up to the sunshine.
And, the fruit that I bear is the sign of the life in me.
I am shade from the hot summer sundown.
I am nests for the birds of the heaven.
I'm becoming what the maker of trees
Has meant me to be: a strong, young, tree.

While you are becoming what God has made you to be, know that He has planted you. He has placed the Holy Spirit within you as a continual river of life. You will always have access to life giving water for your dry and parched soul.

  • Roots grow toward the water supply. What do you think your roots look like? Who do you spend time with who helps you move toward God?
  • Roots are anchors for the tree. What scriptures, words from God, activities anchor you to the ground? How would you help another person to grow roots to anchor them with so many claiming truth is relative? When storms come, can you trust your root growth?
  • Roots are underground and not seen by others, but God knows where they are. He has designed roots to seek life-giving water. In your life God will create a thirst and hunger for that which your soul longs for. Are you okay with being alone with God in the unseen and quiet place?
  • NO root, NO fruit. If the root system dries out, the rest of the tree will follow. If you see little fruit in your life, check on your roots (time with God, intimacy with Him, gratitude, etc.)

On this Monday Mantra may you be blessed with the remembrance of God planting you near the resources for all good things. You are not in the desert. You are not growing alone. You are not the same as others. You are growing in the way God has called you to be.

Blessings Love y’all
