Spotting is a technique used by a dancer to focus on one object while performer various turns. Their body is turning at one speed and then the head turns even faster so that it can stop and focus on a stationary object for just one moment. This fixed focus of the eyes helps prevent dizziness, controls balance and prepares for the directing of travel in the next movement. When their world is spinning, focus is needed to perform well.

Reflections on fixing your eyes on Jesus

  1. He becomes a solid focal point when life is spinning out of control. Junk happens to all. Sickness comes out of nowhere, major repairs on vehicles or cars popup, work related stress spikes over money or performance, families fall apart. In the midst of the chaos, Jesus standing in a position of peace and power can help.
  2. Draw strength from His endurance. He has walked through the stress and fears of life. He understands. Sometimes the revelation that He alone really knows what your are going through will be enough to help you move forward. He endured through the pain to the other side. His interaction with our need helps us make it through our difficulty.
  3. It’s a fixation, not a glance. The dancer spins the head quickly so that the eyes have time to stop and focus. What activity helps you slow down enough to focus on Jesus? Being intentional to play worship songs that you love can be helpful. Having “go to” scriptures relating to your area of need can be the strength you are looking to gain. Perhaps you can close your physical eyes so that you can allow your mind’s eye to focus on Jesus.
  4. Continuing action. This phrase is not a past tense, one and done action. Rather, it is a continuation of the preceding verse which explains how we are to run the race- by fixing our eyes continually on Jesus. How would you answer this question to another person? What actions in life are you taking to help you continually fix your eyes on Jesus? Would you give rote Sunday School type answers? Or would you be able to give living illustrations of the ongoing personal interactions that you have with Jesus daily?

We are fearfully and wonderfully made. We can move our gaze ahead quickly beyond our struggles and fix them on our anchor Jesus. May He be the source of life, peace and hope that you need today.

Blessings, Love y’all.
