But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.” Luke 1:30-33 NIV
Advent Chronicles the Angel Gabriel delivers the message to Mary that she will be the mother to Jesus, the Son of God. It’s not the first time that he has spoken of the messiah to mankind. Let’s hear his story
I’m Gabriel, I stand in the presence of God. It was only 6 months ago when the Father said, “the timing is fulfilled, Gabriel. Go and deliver the message to Zechariah.” I have the privilege and honor to speak to the humans who are just a little lower for the moment than we angels are. I speak of the decisions among Father, Son and Holy Spirit regarding the Son.
When the prophet Daniel prayed for understanding of his vision, when his cry for mercy approached the throne of grace, when his broken heart asked for forgiveness for the sins of his Jewish brothers and sisters, I was dispatched with the answer to his request. Father heard his prayer. I spoke of the Messiah, the Anointed one that would come in the future. And when the Messiah comes, he will be put to death. Many have been waiting for this vision to come to pass. Now is that time. You can almost hear a rumble of excitement in the heavenlies among the angels as we wait in anticipation for the Word to become flesh.
I know that people have a hard time believing that good news is truly good with no strings attached. Zechariah prayed for a child, “why would he not believe that the Father could or rather would answer his request?” Miraculous signs can be dismissed, but Zechariah will never forget being made mute for his disbelief. It’s ironic that his inability to speak will be heard all over the world and into eternity. John will be the child’s name and he will prepare the way for the Messiah.
My name is Gabriel and I stand in the presence of God as they discuss the unfolding of the plan that was put into effect even before the foundations of the world were laid into place. It is hard for the angels to understand the mystery that was being unfolded before our very eyes. The Son was setting aside his equality with the Father and the Spirit to become a human, a baby. He would experience the totality of human experience of joy, life, pain, fatigue, hunger, thirst, temptation, loneliness, misunderstanding, grief and even death. He would be completely identified with their need, that He might pay the price for their salvation with the shedding of His righteous blood. Eyes that were blinded to this wonderful truth will be opened when they hear the good news message.
Today, I am sent to Nazareth, to a young Jewish girl named Mary, for she has found favor with the Lord. The Holy Spirit will give life to her womb and she will bear a son who will be called Jesus.
I was designated as “God’s valiant one” to declare to the world that His name shall be Jesus. Mary would accept my words to her as true. She and Joseph will name the boy, Jesus. He will be called the Son of God, rule forever in the line of David, and be Son of the Most High reigning forever.
I must go now, the time is fulfilled and Mary is waiting, She is unaware of the joy and honor that is coming her way. Oh how precious will she be known among women. Now the favorable time of Father has come to earth. A child shall be born in Bethlehem. All the world will be changed because the Son has come to earth. May people receive the message of life, freedom and truth of the Savior of the world in the same manner as Mary.
The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[b] the Son of God. Even Elizabeth, your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.” “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her. Luke 1:35-38 NIV
