Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.  John 5:19-20 NIV

How did Jesus see what the Father was doing? Is it possible for us, His children, to live in this type of oneness that Jesus had with His Father? How would our days be structured differently if we were following what our Father was doing?

There are 3 hints in this passage that will put us in the ballpark of seeing and doing what the Father is doing.

  1. Jesus lived in total honor of the Father. “The Son can do nothing by himself”
    1. Later in the passage Jesus tells that all glory is given to the son by God and that He seeks none for Himself.  To do the works of the Father is not ever about making a name for ourselves,
    2. Learn how to shift all glory to God for everything that is positive in your life. Your friendships, your intellect, your physical strength, your beauty, your influence, your ability to organise, acquire wealth, lead others are all gifts given to you by God. To do the works of God is to bring honor and glory to God. All the good (salvations, servings, signs and wonders, building things, growing things, and sowing and reaping) comes from God and gives glory to God.
  2. Jesus was loved by the Father – “For the Father loves the Son”
    1. Jesus spent a lifetime of obedience in a loving relationship with the Father
      1. You must be born again to see what the Father is doing. John 3 tells us that those who are born of the Spirit know that they are children of God
      2. Obedience is not a “have to do” event, but a choice of honoring those you love. When you obey you are positioning your life to see in the heavenlies. When you are living in rebellion even as a child of God, you limit your view of heaven to the Mercy Seat.
    2. Jesus heard His Father tell Him that He loves Him. At the baptism a voice came from heaven declaring that the Father loves the Son.
      1. Don’t take this event for granted. Jesus, as a man, needed to hear His Father. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Jesus also was inspired by the voice of His Father.
      2. As children of God, the Holy Spirit was given so that we may have the ability to hear the voice of our Father. The Spirit will lead and guide into all truth
      3. One of the most important trainings for new followers of Jesus is to teach them how to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit, how to distinguish His voice, and how to obey what you hear.
  3. Jesus trusted His Father for future works – “Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these,”
    1. Although Jesus did not know exactly what the future plans were, He knew that His Father had more for Him to do.
    2. The Father has plans and purposes for you to fulfill each new day. As the Father has loved the Son, He will treat His children the same way. You are not too old or too young to see and do what the Father has in store for you today.
    3. You may be distracted, preoccupied, consumed with your own affairs, BUT you can still start anew to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.

I know that sounded like a sunday school lesson without a lot of stories. My desire is that you and I learn to see what the Father is doing and then see it worked out in our lives. Perhaps we don’t see many miracles because we do not know how to handle the fame- giving all glory to God? Perhaps we need to learn to nurtured in the practice of being fully aware that our Father loves us. Prhaps you think that God loves others but does not have an intimate plan for wonderful works in your life.

Why don’t you take some time today, to talk with God about these three things. Write down what you think that God is saying to you. Do you have a problem with pride? Can you point to times when you verbalize giving glory to God in front of others for the great things He has done? Do you need to repent and confess to realign your life for loving obedience? Do you need to adjust your busyness to make room for seeing and doing what the Father is doing? God will lead you if you take the time to ask Him and then obey what He says to do next.

As the Father loved Jesus, He loves those who are His followers. To know God is to be intimate with His ways, His word, and the Father HImself. Because of the removal of sin, you have been granted the right to approach the throne room of God…and stay for a while. Saturating your life with the love of the Father does wonderful things in your life…you might learn the rhythms of doing what you see your Father doing.

Blessings Love y’all
