Blessed are those who listen to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway.  Proverbs 8:34 NIV

Wisdom Characteristics

Pam would often ask our children what they would like to be “blessed with” before praying for them at night. Our son Jonathan, consistently asked for God to bless Him with wisdom. Pam and I would join together in blessing (speaking and asking God’s favor to intervene in life) for Jonathan as well as our other children with wisdom.

King Solomon understood that true wisdom begins with an appropriate understanding of the connection which exists between a person and God. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Wisdom does not come by osmosis, nor is it passed down through the genes. It is a gift to those who treasure its value.

In our verse today we see a person who is positioning themselves to mature under the blessing and favor of wisdom.

Characteristics of a Wisdom Seeker

  • Listens to Wisdom’s voice
    • Where do you first learn wisdom’s voice? Your parents. Rejecting your parents’ teaching will squelch wisdom’s call to you
      • You parents were not perfect, but harboring bitterness toward them will stop the flow of wisdom in your life. Forgive, love and honor your parents.
    • Your second learning of the voice of wisdom is from your teachers and instructors. This does not mean that all the advice they give is right and true, but they do carry the advantage of wisdom experience.
    • When you become a follower of Jesus, the Holy Spirit unpacks God’s wisdom first hand. Make sure you know how to hear and follow the leading of the Spirit’s voice in your life.
  • Watches daily at Wisdom’s doors
    • Listening is discerning what you hear, watching is observing what you see. Gaining wisdom includes both.
    • No vacations for using wisdom, it’s on duty daily. How many times have we been saddened by our pause in using wisdom in making the right decision? May God bless you with growing daily in wisdom. Make wisdom part of your daily attire.
  • Wait at Wisdom’s doorway
    • Wisdom has a location where it lives.
    • Wisdom does not usually appear in a hurried or desperate appeal, although God’s grace is ever present.
    • When our children were dating, we set a curfew on conversations and late night outings. Why? Wisdom goes to bed at 10 and is sleeping hard after 11. Haha! Not much good comes from being out late…You have to be asleep for God to speak in dreams.
    • Waiting for an answer is tough. Wisdom honors those who wait for it.

May you be blessed with asking, seeking and finding wisdom every day. May you find the rhythm of yielding to the wisdom of others, and making your own choices.  God loves you and desires the best for you. His wisdom always leads to life, light and freedom. Broad is the way that leads to destruction and narrow is the path that leads to life. Wisdom keeps you on that straight and narrow path.

Blessings Love y’all
