and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19     to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Luke 4:17-20 NIV

Happy New Year’s Eve. The celebrations will be very different this year. Well, the whole year has been different. Many are ready to say goodbye to last year, but are unsure of what may come in 2021. The last couple of days, I have shared why I am filled with hope. The word of God says that we can be filled with hope, Jesus is hope and we are connected with others who share our suffering and joy.

Today, I am filled with hope, because Jesus declared that a time period of God’s favor exists now. At the beginning of Jesus ministry, he read from the scroll of Isaiah the prophet about the future Messiah. Jesus claimed that the fulfillment of that passage was beginning now, by implication in Him.

The year of the Lord’s favor would come when people were in great need. The poor needed good news. If you have never been poor or in great need, then you don’t understand fully the desire for good news. Being needy causes a brokenness to think that things will never change. You wonder if there is ever a way out. The get rich schemes are really a cry for change that you think you can control, but that is always elusive. Jesus shared hope with the needy that is always true.

Those who were sick were healed by Jesus. When John the Baptist was in prison and wanted to know if Jesus was truly the Messiah, Jesus answered by saying the “lame walk and the sick are healed.” We think first of physical sickness, but Jesus also provided healing for the spiritually sick because of sin. Death still comes, but eternal life is provided for those who believe in Jesus.

Jesus preached, proclaimed and taught about the year of the Lord’s favor by declaring that the kingdom of God was now among us. In other words, He spoke what was true. The circumstances did not change the reality that God’s gracious favor was now available to His children.

What are you proclaiming about the New Year?  God’s favor for people that need it or fear and worry? What are the words coming from your own lips about the prospects for the coming year?

Jesus’ declaration about God’s favor being available is never  stifled by circumstances whether good or bad. Political winds of change have no effect on the power of Jesus’ kingdom to bring hope. Even forecast of financial hardships or cultural wickedness will not prevail against the good news of hope in Jesus.

I am filled with hope because Jesus declared that I am living in the year of God’s favor. This was true for 2020 and 2021 and 2022 and so on. May you experience the grace, favor and blessings of God that Jesus declared is now among us. When you get to know Jesus personally, you understand how to live, breathe, and walk in the FOG (favor of God).

Blessings Love y’all
