am i, I AM Strengthened with God’s Power

We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy, Colossians 1:11 NLT

 “With great power comes great responsibility!” As he was dying, Uncle Ben whispered this phrase to his nephew, Spiderman. It is the hinge for the whole series of Spiderman comics. How will he use his special powers for good and to stop evil?

Paul, however, has a very different image for God’s power. The power which raised Jesus from the grave abides in His followers. No less potent. It is part of His abiding presence in our lives by Holy Spirit. It’s not “our” power now to use as we see fit. It is always the power of Christ which dwells within us.

Paul says this power will strengthen us to have the ability to endure and be patient. I was hoping he would have said, “You have power to heal the sick, perform miracles, or do something to show how powerful God really is.” Instead, Paul says this power will help us endure persecution and trials. 

He believes that we need extra strength to look, act and talk like Jesus. To behave as a Christian is not a natural response from the world’s perspective. The world, and our old flesh nature, says we should have the right to fight back, gossip, judge others for what they have done, slap the other check, post our anger on social media, expose those who are doing it wrong, voice our own opinions, stop being friends with those with disagree with, quit our marriage, leave our family, withhold our money from helping those in need, justify our selfishness, or keep talking when we should remain silent. What’s wrong with any of these expressions? They are not Christlike responses.

Today, you have the power to be different! You have God’s power to strengthen you and help you be patient with others who get on your nerves. You have the ability to endure criticism without retaliation. You have God’s voice to lead you in the way you should go.

When you get to the place when you think you can’t handle it anymore – God’s power leads and carries you through. When you are weary of the person who is sitting on your last nerve, God’s power helps you understand how sacrificial love acts. With God’s power, you are strengthened to endure and be patient.

With God’s Power – Comes everything you need pertaining to life and godliness. May you learn to walk daily like a mighty man or woman of God. He provides the power, we follow His lead.
