open shacklesI no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. John 15:15 NIV

Name changes are a big deal. Some have not liked the name their parents gave them and they legally change it. Most women drop a portion of their name when they become married to reflect the whole change of identity. But it is different when someone else decides to change your name…especially for the better.

In most situations people rise up to fulfill the calling of their name. We expect a General to talk, act, sound, and be a General. For some people, it may be hard to accept that others truly see them in this new perspective.  We expect people to change. When a child, act like a child, but a man should act like a man.  Notice the expectation for the name change.

Jesus knew that the old way relationship to God was in a slave – master position. God dictates how we are to act and gets mad at us if we fail to obey. BUT NOW, there is a name change. We are friends of God through our relationship with Jesus. God sees us differently and interacts with us through that changed status of being a friend.

Love has replaced fear. Intimate conversation has replaced harsh dialogue. Living the adventure has replaced monotonous religious duty. Joyful worship has replaced the mundane church hour. Even reading the Bible becomes a delightful experience that feeds the inner man. And the Holy Spirit is a comforting, continual, friend who really helps us live, act, respond and talk like a friend of God.

And even when we fall and sin, there is forgiveness and restoration instead of rejection and disgust.

When we become followers of Jesus…everything changes, including our name. Rise up and live…as a friend of God

Blessings. Love y’all.
