“Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” Judges 6:15 NIV

Crisis of belief occurs when the monumental tasks that God invites us to do, lays at the feet of our frail humanity. Even though we know that God can empower our efforts, our thoughts are transfixed on the impossibilities. How can you feed 5000 when you on hve 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread? The disciples were fully engaged in the whole process of that feeding. For the organized masses of families, they only saw the abundance that was offered by each of the disciples.

The Text

“Pardon me, my lord” – Many feel that this response displays a characteristic of Gideon’s humility. Like Moses, he does not feel qualified for the task. God honored the respect of Gideon’s line of questioning.

“but how can I save Israel? Gideon’s quick assessment of God’s invitation to save Israel has many difficulties in making it happen. At this point, he was not asking for strategy to wage war, rather he is totally focused on his limited resume’ and qualifications.

My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, – Gideon realizes that his clan is poor. They have no monetary wealth. They have land to farm, but are known as the weakest in financial strength

and I am the least in my family.” – Later we find out that Gideon is probably the last of his Father’s sons. Gideon gets to revenge the death of his brothers who were killed earlier by the Midanianites.

But how – Christ in you is the hope of glory. You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. It is God who works in you. God trains my hands for battle so I can bend a bow of bronze. With man this is impossible, with God all things are possible. Live by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. We overcome by the blood of the Lamb, the word of our testimony and loving our lives not unto death. Greater is He that is in youl than He that is in the world.

But how – Look to the author and the finisher of your faith and not on the frailty of your humanity. Bring your best arguments why something cannot happen into God’s throne room of heaven’s riches of transformed lives.

But how – Your lack of money, physical abilities, prominent standing in society, intellectual status are never God’s starting point to use us. He is looking for a yearning to follow Him in obedience.

But how – Should be followed by “yes, Lord”. Mary responded, “but how”, then replied, “May it be unto me as you have spoken”.

Discerning God’s exact invitation, should be the central focus. Gideon laid fleece before the Lord. Today we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Once you know that God is inviting you to do something that requires faith, follow through in obedience. Not my will or abilities, but yours O God.

May God give you grace to move beyond your “but how”.

Blessing Love y’all
