It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Galatians 5:1a NIV

“But I don’t want to go brush my teeth Pappy”, my grandson said to me. His routine was to brush his teeth each night and this was the morning. I started doing a free dance and began to sing to him, “you GET to do the right thing, YOU get to do the right thing, you get to DO the right thing, you get to do the RIGHT thing”. He smiled very big as if to say, you are really silly Pappy. He was right! BUT it was not “cool” enough to make him choose to obey. What motivates you toward obedience?

In the book of Galatians, Paul tackles the tension between obeying the laws of God to obtain righteousness and receiving a righteousness from Jesus that leads to following the Holy Spirit. To try to live all of the “to do’s” of the law only leads to a burden of “what else do I have to do and fail again?” But living by the Spirit gives life in abundance.

Jesus took the heavy burden of sin’s penalty of death for all of us. He has set you free. It is a gift of life that you receive from Him. All of the debt that we had built up and would accumulate in the future, Jesus paid for it with the sacrifice of His precious life-blood. He who the Son sets free is free indeed.

Now here is the even “betterer” part (influenced by a weekend of preschoolers). Once you are free…you are blessed to GET to DO the RIGHT thing. You get to jump into the playground of the fruits of the Spirit and enjoy them all day long. You don’t HAVE to love others, rather you get to experience the joy of loving others.

So think of relationships that you have in your life. How would offering them the fruit of the Spirit impact their life? If you were extending loving actions and words to them continually, how would they respond? How would they react when you expressed abundant patience toward them? How would extending God’s peace change the emotional climate in the middle of tense times? How would using self-control to filter your words and actions benefit those around you?

Today in Jesus you are free!!! You are free to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit to DO the RIGHT thing. May you be blessed with the motivation to enjoy the sweetness of the fruit of the Spirit. When this fruit is given, it blesses both receiver and the giver. Say NO to the “I don’t wants” in your life, and YES to the freedom of enjoying the fruit of the Spirit. Happy eating.

Blessings Love y’all
