Monday Mantra – Family is a Blessing

Today is my dad’s 85 birthday. Pam and I had the opportunity to come down to Florida for a surprise birthday party for him. We got to spend time with her mom and will be taking her back to Alabama with us. We also were able to celebrate my stepdad’s birthday (Papa) and love on my mom. One of my six children and his family were also able to be a part of all the gatherings as well as vacation at Lego Land. I love the sounds of children and grandchildren.

Family is a blessing. From the beginning God had families in mind as He charged Adam and Eve with being fruitful and multiplying upon the earth. The most basic institution is marriage between a man and a woman and then children. There are no perfect families as we know there are no perfect people. Yet God desires families to weather storms, enjoy bounty, navigate conflict, and display the strength of invisible bonds. Families are the microcosms of society.

But I hear your tension of agreement and disagreement. What happens to those who have no children? What happens to those who never marry? Not everyone grows up in a loving family or with two parents, what about them? How is family a blessing to the orphan or the widow?

When you become a follower of Jesus, you are also born into the family of God. This means you have a role and responsibility to fulfill as one of the family members. In the New Testament (which is a guide for being a follower of Jesus) there are 59 “one another” commands which integrate the role of family activity with the other followers of Jesus. We are commanded to forgive, love, encourage, teach and so many more. The point is that followers of Jesus are born into a new family who are expected to do life together as family…no one left behind.

Father to the fatherless, defender of widows— this is God, whose dwelling is holy. God places the lonely in families; he sets the prisoners free and gives them joy. Psalm 68:5-6 NLT.  Notice how God treats the most marginalized in society. He will become a father to the orphan, He defends widows, He remembers the prisoner with joy.

This is the God I serve. No one has to experience life alone. Everyone can personally know and enjoy laughter when the family of God is “one anothering” properly.  My dad, left my mom before I was three. As I have pursued my heavenly Father, He has placed the DNA of a fathering heart within me. I had several men who exhibited healthy fathering love towards me.

We love others, because God loved us first. For the Father God so loved the world (of which I am a recipient of this love) that He gave His one and only Son (Jesus). At the core of family that re-represents the heart of God our Father is a love which chooses to give to the full extent. Jesus modeled this type of love by laying down his life for sinners like me.

If  you have never joined the family of God, I invite you to reach out to God today and ask Him into your life. But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12. If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. Romans 10:9-10.

If these verses reflects the desire of your heart, I invite you to talk to God using the following words as a guideline. You can read the whole tract here  There is Good News,  Bad News, and Good News again.

Dear Jesus
I am a sinner and in need of your love and favor. Forgive me of my sins of living by my own code of conduct which include many ways which are offensive to you. Please come into my heart and make me a new person. In Jesus name Amen

If you prayed this prayer, please let me know. I would like to know and meet one of the newest family members of God.

Blessings, Love y’all
