21 the LORD was with him; he showed him kindness and granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden. Genesis 39:21 NIV
I’ve written many blogs on the theme of blessing for my Monday Mantra category, primarily choosing verses with bless or blessing in them. Yesterday, Pam and I were listening and watching instrumental worship called Dappy T Worship. The 3 hour video was on the goodness of the Lord in which Bible verses were displayed for several minutes. We would read the verses aloud and give God thanks for His kindness. That’s when I noticed the word favor being chosen to appear in several of the verses. So I am going to follow Bible verses of God’s favor for the Monday Mantra.
Previously before verse 21, Joseph had found favor in Potiphar’s eyes and was promoted to the head steward of all that Potiphar possessed. His refusal to the sexual advances of Potiphar’s wife toward him, ended up with him being sent to prison.
While in prison God shows favor to Joseph. Let that sink in for a moment. You might think that true favor would be for Joseph to be released. But God was able to show favor while Joseph was in the middle of his circumstance, while he was not free to go and do as his pleased, while living conditions were bad, while he was stripped of meaningful relationships, and while he was all but forgotten…God showed him favor.
How?
The verse said that God was with him. This promise is true for those who are followers of Jesus. Through the Holy Spirit, God remains with you. He never leaves you nor forsakes you. He is with you and watches over you while you sleep, when you are sick, at work or play, when the boss doesn’t appreciate you, when you sin, when there is conflict with those you love and when your enemy has treated you unfairly again. The Lord is with you because Jesus has made the way for this relationship to be everlastingly good for you.
The verse also says that God showed him kindness. This word points back to God remembering his covenant to Abram. The blessing of God’s covenant overrides our difficulties. Not that it makes them go away, rather God is not inhibited from showing up in the worst of times. He is able to be Himself when our struggles seem overwhelming. He brings hope and peace to us when we are beside ourselves. He erases the blurry conditions of His goodness, so that a clear view of our heavenly Father’s loving bent toward His child comes into view.
On this Monday Mantra, may you remember that because of Jesus you are a recipient of God’s favor in the middle of your mess. May you receive the peace of God which surpasses your understanding to walk with your head up high. As a child of God, His favor is more than an idea, it is tangibly experienced. Live in His favor.
Blessings Love y’all
