i pity the foolLike snow in summer or rain in harvest, honor is not fitting for a fool. Proverbs 26:1 NIV.

Heat is for summer and the harvest needs dry weather, what would be fitting for a fool? In the Bible a fool is far more than just someone who acts stupidly, instead it incorporates one who rejects God, resist correction, and continues to violate God’s standards of right action. To show honor would encourage the foolish that his ways are right. It would also give a stamp of approval of his actions to others.

When we speak highly of someone who flagrantly lives opposite of God’s laws it sends confusing signals to our hearers.  Talent and skills do not negate poor character. Athletes and celebrities who fail to acknowledge God, need our prayer more than our praise.  Our children and friends listen to our speech about others to hear what we truly honor.

Like snow in the winter, we also should seek to speak in a favorable manner of those who are children of God. This doesn’t mean they are perfect, but rather they are fellow travelers in our pursuit of God. Our children should hear us talk well of our Pastors, deacons and elders, Sunday school teachers, other church members, christian government officials and first responders. Let’s recapture the essence of honor as a valuable gem befitting of God’s Kingdom.

Stay in the right season for your speech.
