Saturday Story Time – Jimbob and Lost Things

8 “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins[a] and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” Luke 15:8-10 NIV

The value of finding what was lost is highlighted in our story today.  The word lost is used twice. The words find and found are used 3 times. Another word of note which is significant to the story is rejoicing which is used twice.

Jesus is spending time with tax collectors and sinners and the righteous people begin to complain. This prompts Jesus to tell three parables about lost things or people returning or being found. There is rejoicing of the lost sheep being found, the lost coin, and the prodigal son returning. Each of these parables end with rejoicing.

The religious leaders failed to see the value of the “one”. Why? Jesus clearly stated that He came to seek and to save the lost. He had a rhythm to speak to the masses and spend time with one person like Zaccheus. Jesus values every person, regardless of their economic status, color, skills, or what we think the can offer. Jesus care and so should we.

Today, let us repent (change the way we have been thinking) about our pursuit for lost people.

• Lord, help us to see the value of one lost person repenting in the same passion and manner in which you see them.
• Lord, forgive us for being okay with the few numbers who have changed. 1 missing from 100 was not okay.
• Lord, give us eyes to see who we are to pursue, spend time with, and keep pursuing because you want them in your family.
• Father, forgive us for keeping our mouths closed when we should be sharing the good news more often.
• Father, forgive us for judging others who are trying to share the good news, but not the way we think it ought to be done.
• Father forgive us for acting like the older brother in the prodigal son parable.
• Father, help us resonate with the joy of the angels rejoicing over one sinner who repents.

True repentance finds a change in action. The harvest is plentiful and the labors are few, but today, we invite you Jesus to use us to look for (seek out an spend time with) those who are lost.
