6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Luke 12:6-7 NIV
During the beginning of Covid there was so much bad news. I had a pastor friend that died within six days of contracting the virus. With all of the uncertainty, fear and speculation had a free reign to dominate our thoughts, conversations and actions.
During that time, I began writing “Fear not Friday” blog entries by focusing on scriptures as the rock that doesn’t move in the shifting sands of an uncertain future. Today feels like one of those days.
You are not forgotten, that is what Jesus said.
He gives two illustrations which should bring us comfort. The first is the value of a sparrow. Two pennies for five sparrows? That would appear to be almost worthless. “Why would we even take the time to make the sale or trade? If we notice a sparrow, it is usually as a nuisance or a fleeting thought. Yet, Jesus declares not one of them is forgotten.
Let me say again, You are not forgotten. The trial that you are facing regarding health uncertainties does not escape God’s notice. It doesn’t matter how big or little the diagnosis – God is with you.
There is a path forward for your finances. Manna from heaven did not come in a prepackaged bread container. They had to go out daily, gather the fragments, crush it into meal and then bake it. God still provides the resources of manna (His word for your next). Regarding finances, your next might include brokenness, confession and repentance for mismanagement. You next might include another job to add more income. Your next may be a realignment of your spending and saving – and giving. Trusting God with finances means that we remember He owns it all – our giving is the reminder that we can trust Him with meeting our needs.
The second illustration is about the number of hairs on our head. As I am getting older that number keeps changing daily. Its probably true that we could somehow take the time to count every one of them, but God already knows that number. He cares about the smallest details of our lives.
Details are not meaningless. Details are the things that define who you are, how you think, those things that make you unique and special. He cares about how you organize your house and schedules your day. He knows the phone calls, the text and the conversations you need to have each day. God knows all of those things about you and declares you are valuable. You are not forgotten.
God knows how much it costs to put gas in your car. He knows how much extra the groceries were and how much fewer the items were in the buggy. God knows of the wars and rumors of wars. He knows of accidents and violence that appear to be happening at an increasing rate. AND God knows the value of YOU! You are not forgotten.
SO on this Fear Not Friday remember that you are not forgotten. Hold your head up high and put a pep in your step. God has been counting those long before your watch closed its rings. He has shown you how you should live. Do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with Him. Rinse and repeat.
Blessings, Love y’all
