7 When the Israelites cried out to the Lord because of Midian, 8 he sent them a prophet, who said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says…: Judges 6:7-8a NIV
Does God still speak through prophets? I believe, Yes! . In the moment of great need, we look for someone to guide us toward answers that are true. I believe in our present circumstances, we need the prophetic voice, know how to discern what is true, and adjust our lives to what God is saying.
The prophetic voice – The most basic definition of a prophet is one who is speaking on God’s behalf. Moses functioned as a prophet as he spoke to Pharaoh telling him to let God’s people go. Nathan spoke to David, “thou art the man” referring to David’s adultery with Bathsheba. Elijah was a prophet to the nation and the king. Isaiah pointed to the coming Messiah.
Jeremiah was known as the weeping prophet. He wept because his message revealed that judgment was coming to his nation. He also wept because his voice was unheeded amidst the voices of many false prophets who were telling the people that things were going to work out.
Jesus is the premier prophet as He revealed God the Father’s heart for all of mankind. God loves people and wants us to follow Him. Jesus is known as the one who is the way, the truth and the life. Although He wanted people to hear what God is saying, people rejected him.
Today, the followers of God first hear God’s voice through the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. Jesus said that the Spirit will lead and guide into all truth. The word of God is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. If you want to know what God is saying to the church today….you will start by immersing yourself in the word of God and training your ear to hear the promptings of the Spirit.
Can God still use men to speak prophetically on His behalf? Absolutely. On a micro scale, every Sunday morning a preacher stands in the pulpit declaring God’s word to the people. It is an awesome responsibility that will incur strict judgment for faithfulness to the correctness of that message to the heart of God.
Are there false prophets today? Yes. Paul said that the word of a prophet is subject to the prophets. In other words, there are no lone wolves declaring a new insight and revelation that is not consistent with God’s word and in agreement with other known prophets. In the last days, the antichrist will lead people astray because of the strong deception that he is speaking on God’s behalf.
Is the message always about the future? Partially. Most messages start by revealing a past that needs to be altered, so that the hope of the good future can be realized. The prophetic word reveals that we have sinned, harbored unforgiveness, or failed to follow God’s principles. The hopeful future hinges upon our response to the prophetic word. The devil works in slander, God’s word is pointed to specific choices of behavior that violated God’s way. God’s word affirms with correction.
Salvation starts with this same method. We realize that we have sinned against God, because someone has shared this word from God. The Holy Spirit speaks to our heart that this information is indeed true. Jesus washes away our guilt as we adjust our lives to receive Him. Our good future is based on our response to the revelation of our past sin.
A prophet’s words are used to break up the hard ground of our heart that has grown desensitized to God’s morals. God’s word is sharper than any double edged sword. It penetrates to the very core of our heart and thoughts in which they are now exposed. We need prophets because our hearts are hardened and we can live in deception. Like King Ahab, we don’t like prophets, because they speak a word that meddles in our lives.
Who would you think are the modern day prophets on a national scale? Before you answer, are you willing to adjust your life to the word of God that they are speaking? Hearing and not following through with obedience creates a hardening of the heart.
This list is not exhaustive nor intended to show priority to the most important. I just want you to begin thinking, “what are the prophets saying? Are they communicating a similar message? Is there a response that I need to be taking?” Franklin Graham, Tony Evans, Luis Palau, Tim Keller, John Piper, Jentezen Franklin, Rick Warren. Who would you add? Many of our seasoned and aged men of God are passing away…who is God raising up to speak to the nation on His behalf?
When the children of Israel cried out to the Lord, He sent a prophet….someone to declare what God is saying. What do you think God is telling America today? What are the prophet’s saying? What does the Word of God and the Holy Spirit want us to know? God loves the world and desires to reconcile it to Himself. Be reconciled.
Blessings Love y’all
