Pursue [this] love [with eagerness, make it your goal] 1 Corinthians 14:1a Amplified Bible
Janie, what are you doing? Asked Mom.
“I’m making hearts,” said Janie.
“I know, I see them. They’re all over the room. Why are you making so many hearts?”
“Because I want to follow, chase after love.”
“Well, you don’t have to make hearts to do that.”
“But Mommy, the Bible says in First Corinthians 14:1 that we need to make love our highest goal. We’re to pursue it.”
Mommy chuckled with a small grin. “Yes, He does say that. But how do making these hearts help make that goal a reality?”
Well, here is my plan. I’m going to cut out every single heart and then I’m going to take some tape, and every single place I go, I’m going to tape a heart on it.”
“Well, that’s a lot of places. I mean, you have school and you have your friends. You go outside to play. That’s a lot of places to put the heart.”
“But that’s the point, Mommy. The Bible says that we’re supposed to pursue love above everything else. So if I put a heart in every single place I go, it means I’m supposed to love everyone. Everywhere!”
Mom smiled again, but this time more contemplative. “Janie, What do you mean everywhere?”
“Well, like when I’m outside playing and then Joey comes over and wants to throw rocks at me or try to hurt me, I’m supposed to love him, too.”
“He better not throw rocks at you,” mom said. “I’ll tell his mother and we’ll deal with that quickly.”
“Oh, I know, mom,” said Janie. “But before everything else, I am supposed to figure out how to love him.”
Mom smiled again, with a little bit more conviction this time. “But Janie, there aren’t enough hearts and tape to put everywhere you go.”
“I’ll do my best mom, that’s the goal I’m going after. There is no second place for love. The Bible says everybody needs to be loved.”
Mom begins to squirm a little bit more uncomfortable. She is trying to think of a situation in which maybe this love thing doesn’t apply. Surely there are some exceptions? In reality, she began to think of times that she was not loving.
Mommy thought about the conversation with Daddy the day before. She thought about being at church in the Sunday school class when they were talking about somebody making food and somebody else made a comment that the food wasn’t that good. That didn’t feel very loving.
Mommy thought about all the people that were upset with one another at the PTA meeting because they couldn’t come to a decision they all agreed on. That didn’t feel very loving, either.
Mommy looked at Janey and asked, “Can I have some paper?
“Sure,” Janie said. “What are you going to do with yours?”
“I think I have some hearts that I need to make, too.” replied Mom with a very pleasing smile.
The end.
What would you day look like if love was the highest goal that you are pursuing above all else?
Blessings Love y’all
